The Crisis and Trauma Program is proud to work with The Schoolhouse – education for refugees and asylum seekers in Israel – on our hands-on field experience. Schoolhouse’s students are mainly from sub-Saharan Africa, and have been forced to flee their lands to seek shelter elsewhere. The Schoolhouse provides educational opportunities to help prepare them to earn a living.
Our MA candidates work with The Schoolhouse and its students, operating in a social-work role and gaining first-hand experience dealing with the problems of asylum-seekers from less developed parts of the word. Our current field placement student even got to accompany the Schoolhouse on some of their extracurricular jaunts – a trip to the Golan heights, and a more somber visit at the Holot Detention Center.
We also get to participate in some uplifting news, as our students can attend the graduation ceremonies at the end of a class session. The most recent graduation was held on December 29, 2017, and we were there to take pictures.
