Message from the Head of School

In an era when Israeli society is facing unprecedented social challenges, its social workers are playing a crucial role in addressing pressing social and inter-personal problems by building and strengthening resilience, but also in shaping its future by promoting the core values of the social work profession - solidarity, human rights, human dignity, freedom, and sustainability.

Our faculty members, who rank among the leading researchers and educators in Israel and worldwide help make the School of Social Work a hub for theoretical and practical exploration of the issues impacting the modern world. The Bob Shapell School of Social Work is proud of its comprehensive course offerings that include subjects such as community and intergroup relations, social policies and practices, health, gender, sexuality, race and racialization, social minorities, migration, refugeehood, human trafficking, intercultural mental health, physical pain, social justice and its intersections with epistemic and ecological-social justice, loss, bereavement, and grief, child abuse, youth and young people at risk in the community and in out-of-home placements, religion, spirituality, mentoring, prostitution and payment for sex, violence against women, poverty, neoliberalism, socioeconomic rights, civil-political rights, addictions and recovery.

The Bob Shapell School of Social Work fully shoulders its responsibility to train practitioners to intervene in pressing societal issues by empowering individuals, developing services, and by leading and driving social change. We believe that a robust understanding of social realities, combined with workable approaches on the ground, is key to creating a just and more inclusive society.

The learning experience at our school centers on its students and the development of their professional capacities. The multidisciplinary coursework includes frontal courses—some in small groups—hybrid courses, and extensive fieldwork/practicums in different social welfare services throughout its degree programs. Our students are outspoken about the significant professional growth they experience at our school, and the ways in which it contributes to their personal development and career opportunities.

If what you’ve read here resonates with you, I invite you to join us to learn, explore, question, influence, and become part of a profession that can change the lives of individuals, families, communities, and Israeli society as a whole for the better.
